How it's estimated

This uses the well-known Epley formula: 1RM = weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30). So 100 kg for 5 reps ≈ 100 × (1 + 5/30) ≈ 117 kg. Estimates are most accurate at lower rep counts (under ~10).

Limitations

The Epley formula is one of several 1RM prediction equations (others include Brzycki and Lombardi) that can disagree by a few percent on the same input — treat any formula's output as a close estimate rather than an exact number, especially the further your test set is from a true single rep.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is a 1RM estimate?

Quite accurate from sets under ~10 reps, usually within a few percent. Accuracy drops as reps climb because endurance varies between people.

What percentage of 1RM should I train at?

85–95% for strength, ~67–80% for muscle growth, and under 67% for endurance. Most programs blend these.

Should I test my true 1RM?

Only when experienced, warmed up, and ideally with a spotter. Estimating from a 3–5 rep set is safer for most lifters.

Why do different 1RM calculators give different numbers?

They use different prediction formulas (Epley, Brzycki, and others), each fitted to slightly different data. Differences of a few kilograms between calculators are normal and not a sign either is "wrong."
